Contemporary Neighborhood Design

Being the capital of Saudi Arabia and one of the fastest growing cities in the Middle East, Riyadh’s population increased drastically during the past century and is still expected to double within the next decade as part of Saudi 2030 vision, with urban expansions due new neighbourhoods built to match that demand.
This project focuses on Riyadh’s traditional domestic architecture in terms of climatic, religious and socio-cultural factors as valuable resources in proposing contemporary design solutions in a low-rise and higher density approach on the scale of dwellings and neighbourhoods, reflecting the city’s identity and promoting a more sustainable lifestyle. Section drawings are used as the methodology to develop a further narrative and deeper understanding of the urban context to analyse, compare and propose contemporary solutions.

This project is in alignment with the core values of King Salman Ibn Abdulaziz’s charter for Architecture and Urbanism:

Through reviving the identity and values of Saudi culture in a contemporary and flexible design.

Design housing systems in a human pedestrian oriented approach and enhancing the connection with social and natural environment of the city, while considering the current status of automobile needs

By development of the sustainable solutions and materials from Riyadh’s heritage to meet with current technology, reduce dependency on air condition through housing and neighbourhood layout.
